I haven't looked it up, but I assume !identica is hosted in Canada. Either case, it's a good idea for users requiring pseudonyms to use smaller, federated services. You will of course not get away from centralization problems if you use a service that is essentially centralized. But that's where federation comes in. Hosting the service in a country that respects user privacy is also a good solution. And I doubt anyone would say the US lives up to its promises. Thus Twitter, abiding to US laws, is a worse choice than any non-US service. At least for #occupy activists .)
